Our Best Kobalt Tools for 2020 Reviews and Comparisons

1. Kobalt 227-Piece Mechanic’s Tool Set

Product Highlights

Trying to find a quality mechanics set of tools today is almost impossible, not because there are so few options but because there are an almost unlimited amount of choices – all of them promising to give you ALL of the tools you need to work on vehicles from here on out.

Unfortunately, the majority of those kinds of toolsets fall well short of expectations when the rubber meets the road (so to speak).

The Kobalt 227 piece standard and metric chrome mechanic’s toolset does not fall into that category.

This is one of the best mechanic’s toolsets you will find anywhere on the market right now, a toolset that includes (almost) everything you ever need to work on cars, trucks, lawnmowers, snowmobiles, jet skis, and pretty much everything else with a motor.

117 commonly used sockets (both 6 and 12 point sockets, at that), multiple ratchet sets, multiple extensions, combination wrenches, hex keys, and a whole bunch of assorted tools are mixed in as well.

You won’t have to scramble for tools on your next car project, that’s for sure.

To begin with, you’ll have ¼ inch, ⅜ inch, and ½ inch drive sockets and ratchets to work with when you use this Kobalt mechanics set.

You’ll also be able to use standard and metric configured ratchets across the board, guaranteeing that you can work on American-made vehicles as well as European and Japanese vehicles without any difficulty.

All of the tools themselves are made from stainless steel that has been chrome finished, giving them strength and durability (not to mention resiliency) that a lot of other inexpensive toolsets will have.

Kobalt has a wonderful reputation for making high-quality tools across the board and these are no exception.

The case that they come included in is solidly built and well-appointed. It’s basically an oversized plastic toolbox with an organization for absolutely EVERYTHING included within.

What We Like About Kobalt 227-Piece Mechanic’s Tool Set

There’s a lot to really like about the mechanic’s toolset from the folks at Kobalt, but the sheer volume of tools you’ll have to pick and choose from has to be its biggest advantage.

You really will not ever have to scramble around for tools again when you need to work on a vehicle. Everything that you could ever need – and pretty much every imaginable size – is contained within this multi-drawer toolbox.

What We Don’t Like About Kobalt 227-Piece Mechanic’s Tool Set

At the same time, that actual toolbox itself is a little flimsy and lower quality than the actual tools themselves.

It’s obvious that Kobalt looks to save a little bit of money by going with a plastic box rather than a metal one but you can feel the difference immediately. There are certainly some questions about how this toolbox will stand up over the years.

  • Super well-organized
  • Standard and metric sockets and wrenches
  • Pretty much every hand tool you need to work on automotive projects
  • The very affordable price tag
  • High-quality tools across the board

  • The actual toolbox itself is cheap and flimsy
  • Some of the tools are difficult to pop out of their dedicated storage space
  • Replacing tools if you lose them in the future can be a challenge without buying a brand-new kit

2. Kobalt 24V MAX Brushless 2 Tool Combo Kit

Product Highlights

While Kobalt is primarily known for producing fantastic hand tools, they also make some of the best compact and cordless power tool options money can buy.

The Kobalt set that we review right here is one of those impressive combination setups, giving you two different kinds of drivers – a traditional cordless drill and a high impact driver – to get all kinds of jobs done around the house or around the shop.

Both of these power tools take advantage of next-generation lithium-ion technology, both of them use the same batteries and the same charger, and both of them are lightweight and ergonomically designed as well as super comfortable in the hand.

Let’s delve a little bit more into this two-piece combo in this Kobalt tool’s review.

For starters, each of these cordless drills is built on the back of a 24 V lithium-ion technology battery system.

This battery system is incredibly advanced, allowing the batteries themselves to get 50% more power to the drills than traditional lithium-ion batteries while lasting 3.6 times longer than the 18 bolt Kobalt tools using NiCad batteries.

You’ll be able to charge these batteries faster, run them longer, and enjoy more consistent power all at the same time.

The quarter-inch impact driver features a brushless motor system that provides upwards of 1800 pounds of torque with three individual speed settings that you can control right on the trigger. The impact driver can handle all kinds of heavy-duty tasks that larger (and brand-name) impact drivers may not have been able to because of this motor system.

The ½ inch drill/driver set up also has a brushless motor capable of producing up to 650 pounds of torque. And while it doesn’t have three individual speed settings it does have two, with a variable speed trigger set up and a 100% keyless chuck that makes using this drill really easy.

What We Like About Kobalt 24V MAX Brushless 2 Tool Combo Kit

The best thing about this particular Kobalt toolset is that it offers fantastic cordless options at an almost unbeatable price. Kobalt clearly didn’t pull out any stops when it came to making high-quality cordless tools but they offer both of them at a unified price point significantly lower than what you find from companies like DeWalt or Milwaukee.

The build quality of these Kobalt cordless tools is really impressive, too. The warranty on these cordless setups isn’t quite as good as what you get with traditional Kobalt hand tools. But it’s nothing to sneeze at, either.

Finally, the built-in LEDs on both of the tools (right up near the chuck itself) guarantees that you have plenty of work light when you are tackling projects. This is implemented in a really smart and innovative way that never “gets away” – always flooding the work surface with enough light without interfering with the operation of the drill itself.

What We Don’t Like About Kobalt 24V MAX Brushless 2 Tool Combo Kit

Truthfully, the only thing we really don’t like about the combo kit is that there aren’t more Kobalt tools included!

The overwhelming majority of people that might think about getting your hands on this Kobalt two-piece set probably could get away with just buying the Kobalt drill/driver on its own.

The impact driver is really useful in specific situations – but it’s not exactly something you must have on hand at all times.

  • Very well-designed and made of high-quality materials
  • Super lightweight and easy to hold over extended amounts of time
  • Consistent power from the lithium-ion battery that lasts a lot longer than competing options
  • Quick charging capabilities get you to 50% battery from 0% in about 40 minutes

  • The lack of other Kobalt tools in this set kind of handicaps consumer excitement
  • The tools are quite as “flashy” or as feature-rich as some of the (much more expensive) brand-name options

3. Kobalt 230-Piece Household Tool Set with Soft Case

Product Highlights

Those that are on the hunt for a set of hand tools that will pretty much cover every DIY/household project imaginable are going to fall head over heels in love with everything that this 230 piece set from Kobalt includes.

Similar to the mechanics as we highlighted above as far as its complete coverage of including every tool you need to handle most household projects, you don’t have to be a tradesperson or a carpenter to make the most of this setup.

Sockets, ratchets, hammers, wrenches, pliers, screwdrivers, and so much more are all included in this combo kit – basically giving you every tool you’ll need from here on out to maintain and update your home.

No, there aren’t any power tools included in this combo set up. But literally, everything else you’ll ever need – aside from specialty tools sold separately – are going to be found in this soft sided case.

The expansiveness of the tools that are included in this Kobalt set cannot go underappreciated.

Every homeowner has found themselves scrambling for a specific tool shortly after purchasing a property, whether that’s to fiddle around with stuff door jams, to replace old windows, swap out outlet plates, or pretty much anything else you might come across.

Well, Kobalt has you covered in every department (and then some) when it comes to home projects and DIY efforts.

As we just mentioned a moment ago, you get hammers, screwdrivers, wrenches, sockets, ratchets, scissors, pliers, tape measures, Allen key wrenches, a baby level, and a whole bunch of other miscellaneous tools that you’ll find yourself reaching for time and time again with this great kit.

The included soft case makes storage really simple and straightforward, too.

It’s obvious that Kobalt really went out of their way to make something user-friendly, something comfortable, and something that homeowners are going to be able to keep organized without any real headache or hassle.

What We Like About Kobalt 230-Piece Household Tool Set with Soft Case

The number one thing we like about the 230 piece household toolset from Kobalt is the sheer volume of tools you’ll have available.

The second thing we like is the quality of the tools that you’re going to get in this bag.

A lot of “all-in-one” toolsets – specifically those that are marketed towards homeowners and DIYers.

These are the exact same tools you get if you purchased them separately from the folks at Kobalt. That’s a huge game-changer and a big reason to get your hands on these tools on its own.

You won’t have to worry about this inexpensive set falling apart or breaking down anytime soon.

What We Don’t Like About Kobalt 230-Piece Household Tool Set with Soft Case

What we don’t love about this set (and something we have to make clear in this Kobalt tool’s review) is that this bag is REALLY heavy.

Like REALLY heavy.

We are talking almost 25 pounds when fully loaded heavy, in fact.

That’s a lot of weight to toss around, especially if you are going to be using these tools on a regular basis. The bag (a soft-sided, canvas and nylon kind of bag) is obviously well-made and strong enough to hold all of those tools – but long-term durability is going to be a bit of a question for sure.

Offers a lot of tools, but the overwhelming majority of them aren’t all that well-made and aren’t all that solid.

  • This set includes (almost) every tool you’ll need to work on your home
  • The organization is top-tier, with a place for every single one of the included tools within the quality bag
  • The tools themselves are well-made and durable with a great warranty
  • All of these tools work with other Kobalt hand tools, allowing you to mix and match or add to your set later down the line

  • The tool collection is very heavy
  • It’s a little bit on the pricey side of things compared to other “all-in-one” household tool sets
  • There are a couple of tools you probably won’t use very often at all (tiny screwdrivers and Allen wrenches, for example) that bump up the tool count

Final Verdict

At the end of the day, if there’s just one set of tools that you order from the Kobalt options we highlighted above it has to be that Kobalt 230-Piece Household Tool Set we just mentioned.

Not only do you get 230 hand tools that are incredibly useful in a single kit with this investment, but you also get the kinds of tools that you are (likely) to need a lot more often than a cordless power drill set or mechanics tools.

Now, if you are going to be working on your cars almost religiously or are going to need a power drill and have most of your household hand tools already collected then maybe you go with a couple of the other choices.

But if you are looking to start your tool collection off on the right foot you can’t go wrong with the 230 piece household set from the folks at Kobalt.

Buyer’s Guide – FAQ Section

Are Kobalt Tools Cheaply Made Compared to “Name Brand” Tools?

Absolutely not!

These tools are high quality across the board, made out of fantastic construction materials (almost always stainless steel, chromed steel, and aluminum, etc.) and every legendary reputation in the industry for durability and reliability.

Are Kobalt Tools Made in the USA?

A lot of Kobalt hand tools are made 100% in the USA but not all of them have that distinction.

Some are made in Vietnam, some are made in China, and some are made overseas and then assembled in the United States – including a lot of the power tools that the folks at Kobalt make.

What’s the Kobalt Tools Warranty Like?

As we mentioned earlier in this Kobalt tool’s review this company does have one of the best warranties in the tool industry, ranking just below the Craftsman tool 100% legitimate lifetime guarantee.

Whereas you could walk into any Craftsman shop (Sears or Lowe’s) and turn in any Craftsman tool – from any era and any decade – and get a free replacement for any reason whatsoever – you’ll only be able to do the same with Kobalt tools at the same place that you’ve purchased them already.

That means that if you buy a new hammer while visiting family across the state you have to return there to trade in your hammer and take advantage of the warranty. But if you’re going to be ordering all of your tools from one convenient location that’s not something you have to worry about.
