Shoes may be a girl’s best friend, but for men, it’s our work boots.

They put up with us through the thick and thin, staying with us job after job, and yet they always remain the last things we put on before we go, and the first things to come off when we get back home. Well we, and Keen, are here to change that.

Our Best Keen Work Boots Reviews and Comparisons

1. Keen Utility Men’s Milwaukee 6” Steel Toe Work Boot

Product Highlights

Our first Keen boot we’re taking a look at is the Milwaukee 6” steel toe. It offers a very classic design with all the fittings to make sure the boot lasts from 9 to 5. With its waterproof protection, slip-resistant sole, and flexible construction, no matter what surface you find yourself on, the Milwaukee will adapt to you, and with you, every step of the way.

Features

  • Enforced Steel Toe
  • Oil and slip-resistant sole
  • Removable insole
  • Waterproof leather upper

What We Like About Keen Utility Men’s Milwaukee 6” Steel Toe Work Boot

These boots are tremendously comfortable right out of the box, especially for being reinforced steel toe. This has been the greatest upside to owning them – you don’t need to break them in. This may be in part due to the great slip-resistant sole that truly keeps you safe and steady on whatever surface you come across.

The protection of the steel toe as well as the full-grain waterproof leather adds to the peace of mind. The fact they also look great for a work boot is another added bonus.

What We Don’t Like About Keen Utility Men’s Milwaukee 6” Steel Toe Work Boot

While they are comfortable, we’ve had some problems with its construction. Numerous customers have complained that the sole and lace buckles have broken within just a few months after purchasing them.

Constant squeaking has been a noted issue with the boot, though this can be remedied with just a little talcum powder underneath the removable insole.

PROS

  • Comfortable the minute you step into it
  • Waterproof leather
  • Slip-proof soles really do work
  • Steel Toe Protection

CONS

  • Soles can wear out or separate somewhat quickly
  • Weak lace buckles
  • Known to squeak loudly

2. Keen Utility Men’s Pittsburgh 6” Steel Toe Work Boot

” >

Product Highlights

The Pittsburgh 6” Steel Toe Work Boot is similar to the Milwaukee in many aspects, as they both share a steel toe, waterproof outers, and slip-resistant sole. What separates the Pittsburgh is the added midsole stability plate that provides exceptional heel stability and support. And while it may add to the overall weight of the shoe, the Milwaukee is still considered just a medium-duty boot.

Features

  • Enforced Steel Toe
  • Oil and slip-resistant sole
  • Removable insole
  • Waterproof nubuck leather upper
  • Midsole stability plate

What We Like About Keen Utility Men’s Pittsburgh 6” Steel Toe Work Boot

Just like the Milwaukee, Pittsburgh is comfortable the minute you step foot in them, but with the addition of the midsole stability plate, it puts less strain on your knees and hips over time. With all the same safety features as the Milwaukee, Pittsburgh has received far fewer complaints about faulty manufacturing – with fewer soles separating and practically no complaints about the lace buckles.

What We Don’t Like About Keen Utility Men’s Pittsburgh 6” Steel Toe Work Boot

With that being said, Pittsburgh is considered a medium-duty shoe yet is almost a pound heavier than the Milwaukee, which can add up over the course of an entire day. Plus with the additional cost of Pittsburgh on top of that, it can be understood why some may choose a less expensive Keen option with all the same features.

PROS

  • Comfortable right out of the box
  • Same safety features as Milwaukee
  • Midsole stability plate
  • Less faulty manufacturing

CONS

  • Heavier shoe but only considered medium duty
  • Expensive price tag

3. Keen Utility Men’s San Jose 6” Aluminum Toe Wedge Work Boot

Product Highlights

One of the most stylish boots Keen has to offer, the San Jose 6” Aluminum Toe Wedge Work Boot supplies just as much functionality as it does fashion. It features an air-infused insole that dramatically lowers the overall weight of the boot, making it also one of Keen’s lightest boots to date. A waterproof leather upper, slip-resistant sole, and aluminum-reinforced toe complete this lighter duty work boot.

Features

  • Aluminum Toe
  • Oil and slip-resistant sole
  • Removable insole
  • Waterproof leather upper
  • Air-infused midsole

What We Like About Keen Utility Men’s San Jose 6” Aluminum Toe Wedge Work Boot

A quick glance at this boot and you might think it’s a casual boot, not one you can take to work. And yet, the San Jose is just as comfortable as any other Keen boot, along with a waterproof upper and slip-resistant sole. The air-infused midsole injects a great amount of comfort and flexibility to the boot, all while keeping it extremely lightweight. If you aren’t taking on too heavy of a task, San Jose would be a great option for every light-duty work.

What We Don’t Like About Keen Utility Men’s San Jose 6” Aluminum Toe Wedge Work Boot

We don’t however recommend taking the San Jose 6” Aluminum Toe Wedge Work Boot for heavy-duty jobs, such as heavy metal fabrication, construction, and transportation. The aluminum toe is a bonus, but it does not provide a great deal of protection like a steel toe does. In fact, there have been problems reported with the San Jose’s aluminum toe, having quickly worn out and shown through the leather. Along with Milwaukee, San Jose has had some issues with its construction and durability.

PROS

  • Extremely light design
  • Comfortable air-infused midsole
  • Waterproof leather upper
  • Great looking work boot

CONS

  • Aluminum toe keeps it as light duty
  • Questionable durability

4. Keen Utility Men’s Cincinnati 6” Composite Toe Waterproof Wedge Work Boot

Product Highlights

Another stylish Keen product, the Cincinnati 6” Composite Toe Waterproof Wedge Work Boot is a heavy-duty boot that boasts extreme comfort right out of the box. Similar to San Jose, the Cincinnati also features an air-infused midsole that provides excellent comfort. The composite toe provides the safety you require from heavy load days, and the rubber outsole gives excellent slip protection – all while keeping this heavy-duty shoe lighter than many of its counterparts.

Features

  • Composite Toe
  • Oil and slip-resistant rubber sole
  • Removable insole
  • Barnyard Proof and Waterproof leather upper
  • Barnyard Proof and Waterproof leather upper

What We Like About Keen Utility Men’s Cincinnati 6” Composite Toe Waterproof Wedge Work Boot

The Cincinnati has great additional features that make this heavy-duty work boot a very worthwhile purchase. With its Barnyard Proof leather upper, it resists many factors such as acid, chlorides, and hydroxides that over time will age almost every other boot – except of course the Cincinnati. The wedge rubber sole also supplies greater traction than that of the Milwaukee or Pittsburgh. It also makes it lighter than most heavy-duty boots, increasing movement and comfort.

What We Don’t Like About Keen Utility Men’s Cincinnati 6” Composite Toe Waterproof Wedge Work Boot

Cincinnati has had numerous complaints about its ability to keep out water, something that can be a concern for many workers that bear the great outdoors. And while the traction is supreme, the rubber tread has also been noted to separate from the bottom of the shoe.

PROS

  • Light design, yet heavy-duty boot
  • Comfortable air-infused midsole
  • Barnyard Proof leather upper
  • Greater traction with rubber sole

CONS

  • Less than stellar waterproofing
  • Rubber tread separates

5. Keen Utility Men’s Flint II Mid Steel Toe Work Boot

Product Highlights

The Keen Utility Men’s Flint II Mid Steel Toe Work Boot improves off its predecessor by being lighter, adding a better outsole for traction, and a new state-of-the-art midsole that is lightweight and compression resistant, giving you an extra bounce to your step. But don’t let the hiking boot inspiration fool you, the Flint II still offers a waterproof leather upper and mesh design, a reinforced steel toe, and removable insoles. Take it to the outdoors or to the office – this light-duty work boot is versatile at its finest.

Features

  • Enforced steel toe
  • Oil and slip-resistant rubber sole
  • Removable insole
  • Waterproof leather upper with fine mesh design
  • Compression resistant midsole

What We Like About Keen Utility Men’s Flint II Mid Steel Toe Work Boot

The Flint II’s are a major upgrade from the Flint I’s, and the greatest testament to that is its significantly reduced weight. These boots are the lightest we reviewed (just edging the Keen Utility Men’s San Jose 6” Utility Toe Wedge Work Boot by .6 oz), and the rubber soles pack great comfort inside a well designed, and slip-resistant, package. The compression-resistant midsoles are another noticeable upgrade, and really make a difference over the workday. While these boots may not look like your typical work boots, if you aren’t needing heavy-duty boots, these may be worth a try.

What We Don’t Like About Keen Utility Men’s Flint II Mid Steel Toe Work Boot

There are some complaints about the design of the boot, however. While the midsoles are one of the shoe’s strengths, it can not overcome a clunky tongue design that often gives users blisters. The same goes for issues with the steel toe – users repeatedly expressed discomfort because of it. What this means is that the Flint II might require some breaking in before putting them through a whole workday, which is a major bummer considering the ability to do so with many of the other options listed here.

PROS

  • Lightest Keen boot reviewed
  • Fantastic compression-resistant midsole
  • Waterproof upper with stylish mesh design
  • Slip-proof rubber soles

CONS

  • Bad tongue design
  • Not able to wear right out of the box

6. Keen Utility Men’s Detroit XT Steel Toe Work Boot

Product Highlights

The Keen Utility Men’s Detroit XT Steel Toe Work Boot is a medium-duty work boot made for those on their feet all day. With its KEEN.KEY TECH FLEX, the Detroit provides support from your heel to your midfoot, giving the overall boot greater flexibility than you might expect.

It will also keep you safe and dry with its waterproof leather upper and slip-resistant soles. It once again takes inspiration from the great outdoors with a hiking boot silhouette, something you might not have guessed just from hearing its “Detroit” namesake.

Features

  • KEEN.KEY TECH FLEX
  • Enforced steel toe
  • Oil and slip-resistant rubber sole
  • Waterproof leather upper
  • Reflective Safety Features

What We Like About Keen Utility Men’s Detroit XT Steel Toe Work Boot

The Detroit work boot does a great job of separating itself from its counterparts with its overall design. While the previously mentioned model, the Keen Utility Men’s Flint II Mid Steel Toe Work Boots, similarly takes its roots from hiking shoes, the Detroit goes further with reflective safety features and the excellent KEEN.KEY TECH FLEX.

The added flexibility to the boot makes dropping to your knees or traversing uneven terrain that much easier, for you and for your boots. If not for the steel toe, waterproof upper, and slip-resistant sole, we might think this was from Keen’s hiking line.

What We Don’t Like About Keen Utility Men’s Detroit XT Steel Toe Work Boot

While the KEEN.KEY TECH FLEX adds great mobility and flexibility to the boot, the soles are another issue. Several customers have written grievances about their Detroit work boots hardly lasting a year due to the soles being worn down entirely or just simply falling off.

While these issues are covered under the extensive Keen warranty, it doesn’t put much faith in being able to use Detroit on heavy, labor-intensive jobs.

PROS

  • Extremely comfortable KEEN.KEY TECH FLEX
  • Reflective safety features
  • Waterproof leather upper
  • Stylish hiking boot silhouette

CONS

  • Weak, and sometimes flimsy, soles
  • Unable to use for heavy labor

7. Keen Utility Men’s Mt. Vernon 6” Steel Toe Work Boot

Product Highlights

The Keen Utility Men’s Mt. Vernon 6” Steel Toe Work Boot is probably the burliest boot we chose to review. It is great for medium to heavy-duty jobs as it provides both the comfort and protection you need. It comes standard with a waterproof nubuck leather upper and slip-resistant rubber outsoles, as well as a pressure absorbing midsole that is forgiving to your feet. Not to mention that the Mt. Vernons are made right here in the USA at Keen’s headquarters in Portland, Oregon.

Features

  • Enforced steel toe
  • Oil and slip-resistant rubber sole
  • Removable insole
  • Waterproof nubuck leather upper
  • Shock absorbing midsole

What We Like About Keen Utility Men’s Mt. Vernon 6” Steel Toe Work Boot

The Mt. Vernon’s have everything you need to get the job done, from light to heavy loads, all while making sure you remain comfortable. The midsoles ensure that for the duration you’re on your feet, the Mt. Vernon’s can keep up.

Being made in the USA is always a great way to know your boots are made with care, and it comes through with the Mt. Vernons. Their waterproof nubuck leather upper keeps the rain away, along with any other scuffs or scratches that might come along. These also, along with many of the other Keens, are great straight out of the box.

What We Don’t Like About Keen Utility Men’s Mt. Vernon 6” Steel Toe Work Boot

Some owners have reported that the nubuck leather upper, though great for protecting you from water, scuffs, and dangerous chemicals, can be exceptionally stiff when new. The same can be said for the black leather guards found at the top of the back of the boots. This can lead to irritation when rubbed against your skin. A simple solution may be longer socks. These are also the most expensive Keen work boots we reviewed.

PROS

  • Made in the USA
  • Comfortable right out of the box
  • Waterproof nubuck leather upper
  • Steel toe and slip-resistant sole
  • Terrific midsole that allows all-day comfort

CONS

  • Stiff leather upper and leather backing
  • High cost

8. Keen Utility Men’s Louisville 6” Steel Toe Work Boots

Product Highlights

The Keen Utility Men’s Louisville 6” Steel Toe Work Boots is an exceptionally durable boot that will last you well into the work year, providing all of the safety features you would expect for a heavy-duty boot. Similar to the other 6” work boots we’ve reviewed, the Louisville has the steel toe protection, slip-resistant rubber outsole, and a full-grain leather upper.

What sets this work boot apart is its additional abrasion-resistant materials surrounding the boot’s toe (KEEN Patented Toe Protection), allowing you to test out materials and construction easily and safely with just a kick of your boot.

Features

  • Enforced steel toe
  • Oil and slip-resistant rubber sole
  • Waterproof leather upper
  • Weight distributing midsole
  • Keen Patented Toe Protection

What We Like About Keen Utility Men’s Louisville 6” Steel Toe Work Boots

The Keen Patented Toe Protection is an excellent feature that construction workers should keep an eye for when selecting a boot. To go into more detail, the Louisville’s outsole actually wraps up and over the toe to provide additional protection and durability.

So, anyone who constantly finds themselves kicking rocks, rubber, concrete, or whatever it may be, this boot was specifically made for them in mind. Of course, this wouldn’t be a Keen boot without its comfort, and Louisville’s midsoles distribute weight evenly to make all-day use seem like nothing.

What We Don’t Like About Keen Utility Men’s Louisville 6” Steel Toe Work Boots

While the added durability and protection that the Keen Patented Toe Protection adds, it comes with a cost – additional weight. Not to say this work boot is like walking in cement blocks, but this boot does weigh in as our heaviest contender at 29.3 oz. The rubber sole, while noted for its great traction, has also shown to break and tear for some users.

PROS

  • Keen Patented Toe Protection
  • Great durability
  • Enforced steel toe and slip-resistant sole
  • Weight distributing midsole

CONS

  • A bit on the heavier side
  • Sole has shown to wear faster on some occasions

9. Keen Utility Men’s Lansing Mid Steel Toe Work Boot

Product Highlights

The Keen Utility Men’s Lansing Mid Steel Toe Work Boot is the model most suited for all-day wear. It comes with a moisture-wicking interior that keeps them breathable by allowing vapor to escape, but keeping water from coming in. These also contain removable insoles and a compression-resistant midsole to further ensure comfort. Of course, these wouldn’t be work boots (though they could certainly be used for outside the office as well) if not for the steel toe protection and oil and slip-resistant soles.

Features

  • Enforced steel toe and slip-resistant rubber sole
  • Waterproof leather upper
  • Compression resistant midsole
  • Moisture-wicking interior
  • Reflective webbing for additional visibility

What We Like About Keen Utility Men’s Lansing Mid Steel Toe Work Boot

The Lansing boots are optimal for everyday use, inside or outside the office. The comfort and breathability that the moisture-wicking interior provides can not be understated. This allows for all-day support and stability, especially with their sturdy rubber outsoles and compression-resistant midsoles.

Another great feature is the reflective webbing that runs from the front to the back of the shoe, allowing greater visibility for when you are working in less than stellar lighting conditions.

What We Don’t Like About Keen Utility Men’s Lansing Mid Steel Toe Work Boot

One of the least favorable factors of Lansing is its weak eyelets that hold the laces. Made of nylon, they aren’t as strong or dependable as metal eyelets. As a result, customers have complained of ripped eyelets, especially at the shoe’s upper portion. There is also some concern with the partially mesh uppers, as they have shown to allow fine particulates through its webbing such as sand.

PROS

  • A breathable moisture-wicking interior
  • Reflective webbing
  • Compression resistant midsoles
  • Steel toe and slip-resistant soles

CONS

  • Weak nylon eyelets
  • Mesh uppers allow sand in

Final Verdict after all of our Keen Work Boot reviews:

The Keen Utility Men’s Mt. Vernon 6” Steel Toe Work Boot

The boot that can do it all.

We chose the Keen Utility Men’s Mt. Vernon 6” Steel Toe Work Boot due to all of its exceptional safety features – such as its waterproof leather upper to keep out the rain and scuff marks, to the ever-important steel toe and slip-resistant rubber sole – while never affecting its overall outstanding comfort.

Like we’ve said for most of these Keen work boots, they are comfortable right out of the box, and the Mt. Vernon is no exception. It is also lighter than other heavy-duty work boots but has everything you need to get those same exact jobs done. Thus, you can wear it for everyday use as well – the style of the shoe (another area we loved) being a contributing factor to that.

While not sharing the clear hiking boot inspiration and silhouette like the Keen Utility Men’s Flint II Mid Steel Toe Work Boot or the Keen Utility Men’s Detroit XT Steel Toe Work Boot, the shoe looks the part of a rugged, heavy-duty work boot without being clunky and oversized.

Plus, it has the durability to match that rugged appearance and lasts longer than many of the other models we reviewed, with its upgraded nubuck leather and steel eyelets. The rubber sole of these boots was also hardly ever reported as an issue of being flimsy or quick to wear, unlike other models.

And while every work boot had its faults, we decided that the Mt. Veron’s were the ones we were most willing to live with. The stiff leather upper may be found constraining to some users, but we promise that after just a short time that leather will begin to mold to your feet as if it were made just for you.

And as stated, it’s one of the reasons the work boot is so durable. The leather backing however may be a point of issue for some users, as some complained of skin irritation due to rubbing. We found this feature not that much of a bother when we took care to select socks that covered our upper ankle, though some didn’t even have to go that far to report comfortable results.

We also picked Mt. Vernon’s work boot over the other models simply because every other model was missing at least one critical feature or overlooked detail or design that may have kept you from working at your best. With the Mt. Vernon however, it achieved everything you could want from a work boot: durability, safety, style, and comfort. We’re certain it’s going to be your best friend for years to come.
