Best Pole Saw – Reviews & Buying Guide

A pole saw can be manual or powered using gas and electricity. Primarily, a pole saw is used for trimming the branches of trees and taller greenery, and you can do so without needing a ladder to help. If you have a lot of greenery or trees on your property, then you’ll be in need of a pole saw to help you through.

It’s not as common to buy as a hedge trimmer or a mower, so it makes sense that it’s hard to get the reviews of the best out there.

Pruning trees and larger shrubs on your property can be a difficult job with the wrong tools and no one to stand by and watch you to ensure that you don’t fall off the ladder. A pole saw can make this job far less dangerous, and it can also ensure that you get the job done tidily.

When you come to buy your new piece of equipment, it can help to know which is the best kind of pole saw to use for your requirements. The price and size of the pole saw could come into it, but so could the blade length and power type.

It’s all about preference, and with that in mind, we’ve put together five of the best pole saw reviews on the market so that you can see what’s available and whether it would be suitable for your needs.

The following pole saw reviews should help you decide which is the best for you. Let’s take a look:

Short on time? Our pick for the Best Pole Saw is the Greenworks Cordless Pole Saw.

Why should you buy a pole saw?

A pole saw, like a carpenter’s power tool, is essential for getting the job done right the first time, and its speed, accuracy, durability, and versatility may help you save time and money.

This versatile device has helped many people get their jobs finished faster as well as for less. Pole saws are often used by craftsmen and homeowners alike for cutting wood into desired shapes and sizes.

It saves a lot of work, and it allows you to make a single image with any amount of text on it that can be scaled up or down without changing the layout.

If you’re using.ttf fonts which are not designed for printing (most of them aren’t) then this will also help with the font sizes. It’s definitely worth testing out, because I find it very useful when dealing with long documents.

If your project necessitates a long table, this useful addition eliminates the need for one. You’ll be able to cut with greater efficiency.

You will be able to cut more efficiently. The tool is safe and durable. It can be used for multiple times, which makes it cost effective.

The drill bit life can last for 7 years when you use the Right Bit Size, Right Drilling Speed & Right Angle of Drill Bits.

1. Greenworks Cordless Pole Saw

Greenworks Cordless Pole Saw review
The Greenworks Cordless Pole Saw

If you are looking for an easy-to-use pole saw, then the Greenworks Cordless Pole Saw is a good option for you. Not only are you not held back by cords, but you also get an adjustable shaft that can reach up to eight feet; no ladder required. You also get an easy adjust chain tension system along with an automatic oiler.

This pole saw from Greenworks has a large motor that will make it easier and faster to cut through wood than other corded pole saws.

It’s design is user-friendly and this makes it simple to use. However, its performance could be better if your blade gets dull too quickly. The blades are made of steel and the teeth on them are sharpened to last longer.

The battery and charger are also included in the cost of this model, which makes it a cost-effective option for those who need to consider their budget. There’s a lithium battery pack that is included, and this should provide enough power for your sawing project.

This Greenworks Cordless Pole Saws comes with a powerful 7-amp motor that will give you more control over your work, as well as making the job much easier.

In addition to being cordless, you also get a convenient chain adjustment feature and an ergonomically designed handle. The adjustable cutting guide allows you to cut different materials in the same way every time.

The best part is that it has been built using superior quality components from top brands such as Bosch, Panasonic and Stihl.

This saw features an E-Z start/stop button and the power indicator light shows when the saw is on or off so you know if there are any problems before you use it. Even better? It’s backed by a 3-year warranty!

This is a good model for branches of moderate thickness, and as it’s an affordable tool to look at, you get quality use at a great price. The 8-inch bar and chain are a vital feature of this model, and the battery charge doesn’t last as long as most other models on the market.

This means that you will have to be more careful about how much work you do when using this saw. If you want to cut through thicker wood, then you may find yourself needing to change batteries sooner than you would expect. However, if you plan ahead, you won’t cause any problems like these.

Overall, we believe this is a fantastic offer for individuals who don’t want to spend a lot of money on a cordless pole saw.

Greenworks Cordless Pole Saw Pros & Cons

There are some disadvantages as well as advantages to the Greenworks Cordless Pole Saw, so we’ll start with those. There is a shorter reach for the Greenworks Cordless Pole Saw compared to other models, and sometimes, the battery goes faster than you’d like which could become a source of frustration when you’re in the middle of a job. However, the excellent motor and the lightweight features of this model outweigh the negatives.

6. EGO Power+ 10-Inch 56-Volt Multi Head Pole Saw

This model features an 11-inch bar length instead of the usual 10 inches, allowing for greater durability on hardwood poles. A standard handle guard protects your hand from coming into contact with moving blade parts.

This feature also protects against accidentally running over objects that may trip you up while using this tool. Its weight is 1 pound 13 ounces.

The best chainsaws are heavy and durable. You’ll want something around 40 lbs. that can take some punishment. If you’re going to use it in more than one area, get a corded saw rather than battery powered ones. They have faster charging times and won’t die out unexpectedly if left alone for a long time.

However, when compared to the other models offered by EGO, the GPM10P would not be our first choice as a go-to pole saw. It’s too large for smaller workspaces or areas where space is limited; at nearly 9 pounds, it’s significantly heavier than most lightweight saws.

And because its cutting bar is so big, it requires quite a bit of arm strength to maneuver it through tight spaces. For those who need a simple, easy-to-use saw, though, there aren’t many better choices. In testing, we found it was comfortable to hold and fairly straightforward to operate, making it easier for beginners to learn how to use without much frustration.

We appreciate the tool not locking up during operation so often encountered with cheaper versions, although it does have a tendency to bind up in small spaces.

It feels solid in our hands and is well balanced, which makes it ideal for working around corners, under low ceilings, and around rough edges.

It has a nice swivel wrist strap to keep things secure. The only downside here is that the chain drive system doesn’t offer anywhere near the power of newer electric saws. But it still gets the job done.

Pros

A light portable chain saw that runs on 6 AA batteries, the Pulsator 12 inch chain saw combines portability with performance. With a 4 stroke engine, the tool offers improved performance and efficiency over a 2 stroke design.

There is no clutch necessary for continuous duty applications. At just 5.7lbs, this unit is a lot lighter than others in this category. And at under 8 inches wide by 16 inches high, it fits easily into any work spot.

Cons

  • Chain drive mechanism is not extremely powerful
  • Heavy
  • No lock
  • Limited accessories

Buying Guide: What to Look For

We are sure that you only want the best, so finding the best pole saw for the job in hand is crucial. Buying a pole saw sounds more comfortable than it is, and it takes a lot of thought and research before you can make a purchase.

There are a lot of features to consider when shopping around for a pole saw.  The following section covers essential pole saw specifications and explains their importance. We recommend that you follow the following guide before you choose your pole saw.

Types of Pole Saws

There are many types of pole saws available on the market today. Pole saws fall under four main categories; corded electric pole saws, gas-powered pole saws, telescoping pole saws, and cordless battery-powered pole saws.

1. Battery Powered Pole Saws

When shopping around for a cordless pole saw, you must take into consideration its battery life when fully charged. Many users like to have a spare battery in their tool kit just in case the saws battery runs out in the middle of an important task.

Battery-powered pole saws are very portable, easy to use, and low maintenance. Due to their cordless feature, they won’t get tangled up and get in the way of your work, and all you need to do to get its motor running is press the ‘on’ switch.

2. Gas Powered Pole Saw

Gas-powered pole saws are the most appropriate pole saw type for heavy-duty landscaping work. Professional landscapers and homeowners with a lot of land would benefit greatly from using a gas-powered saw.

Landscapers opt for a gas-powered pole saw due to their longer than usual bars, extremely powerful engines, and reduced vibration. They are a little more expensive than other types of pole saws, and they produce more noise pollution, but for big projects, they are the best for the job.

3. Telescoping Pole Saw

Telescoping pole saws are designed for easy tree pruning and removing branches with ease. They cut branches effortlessly and can sometimes even reach heights of 14 feet. Tree branches must be removed with care to ensure people in the surrounding area are kept safe.

4. Electric Pole Saw

Corded electric pole saws are pole saws that must be plugged into an electric socket in order to work. They are a wonderful option for small home improvement projects and gardening general gardening maintenance. On a negative note, they will not work unless they are within 100 or so feet from the plug socket, rendering them inappropriate for large projects.

They are the most affordable type of pole saw, they are low maintenance and don’t need to be oiled or fueled, and most importantly, they are lightweight. Anyone on a budget should look into electric pole saws as they are affordable and easy to use.

Swing Blade

A swing blade pole saw is designed to give you maximum control over your cut. Often times these tools come equipped with a guard that protects the sides of the saw just behind the cutting surfaces.

Swing blades are great for smaller projects such as making small cuts into saplings or trimming trees close to walls or fences. If you want something with more versatility and precision, try the diamond edge pole saw.

Diamond Edge

This type of saw features a specially ground blade. These saws provide extra precision and balance. As a result, they’re usually best suited to occupations like carpentry or chopping. When pushing through logs and other heavy items, they provide a lot of leverage.

Safety

Using a pole saw safely is a big responsibility. Yes, a pole saw must have adequate safety features, but your behavior while using the pole saw is the number one safety rule.

When using a pole saw, you must always cut branches away from your body, wear protective glasses, a safety helmet, and gloves. We also recommend wearing non-slip work shoes and long work pants.

wearing non-slip work shoes and long work pants.

If you are cutting live or dead trees, make sure to wear clothes that can protect you from splinters. Stop immediately and dial 9-1-1 for assistance if you believe you are in danger of injuring yourself.

The following procedures will ensure safe use of these tools:

Read and understand all instructions before start working with them.

Always read the owner’s manual thoroughly before using any power tool.

Never use a power tool without a current operator’s permit.

Before starting to use this particular product, check local laws and regulations to determine what permits, if any, are required.

Oiling

The most popular chain lubrication method is called “oiling”. This involves using a rag or paper towel to soak up excess oil from around the chain and then applying it directly onto the teeth of the cutting links below the cutter bar.

The most common ointment used is mineral oil. Mineral oils are very good at spreading through wood and not leaving any residue on the surface. Most people feel that this can improve the efficiency of their chains. It also makes cleaning of the area where they apply the oil much simpler.

Oiling your pole chainsaw is a maintenance chore that you must perform in order to keep your chainsaw in the best working condition.

Some chainsaws have an automatic oiler to make life a little easier for you. Not all pole saws have auto oilers, so if this is important for you, check the chainsaws oiling features before purchasing.

Bar Length

The length of the pole you need depends on what jobs you are going to complete with it. On average, pole saws are about 8’’ to 10’’ long. Telescoping pole saws are often slightly longer.

Pole Size

Depending on your location and available materials, different sizes of poles will work best for you. Larger diameter poles are easier to grip as they offer more stability when working with them.

They also allow for a larger cutting surface area which is important if you plan on cutting up tree stumps or large limbs. Smaller diameters may be preferred due to their mobility and ease of use in tight areas.

Size and Weight

Most people forget the importance of how size and weight affect your performance using the pole saw. If a saw is too heavy for you, you won’t be comfortable while using it and that could lead to serious accidents occurring.

Gas-powered pole saws are the heaviest type of saw; if you need something lightweight, go for a corded electric saw. Cordless chainsaws are also relatively lightweight.

Power

Power varies from power tool to power tool. Gas pole saws are notorious for having phenomenal power, whereas electric or battery-powered pole saws are more gentle.

Although it is rare to find a cordless or electric pole saw with the power of a gas saw, it is possible. The best cordless pole saw and electric saw should have adjustable power settings and be equipped with a powerful engine that can compete with gas-powered chainsaws.

Features

Do not just buy any old pole saw. Look around online and see which pole saw has the most features. For example, telescopic saws are great for cutting through thick tree stands.

Also look at the safety equipment included with the saw, as well as the quality materials used in its manufacture.

How to use a Pole Saw:

For starters, set up your blade correctly on your pole saw by checking out these videos from Amazon.com. You want to place the point of your blade right where you will start making cuts in order to reduce the amount of chips produced during wood removal.

Next, you’ll want to adjust your chain tension. This means keeping the chain tight enough that the saw doesn’t get stuck, but loose enough so that the teeth come into contact with each other.

It’s a delicate balance here because if you tighten the chain way too much, it will bind against the housing and cause damage to both the chain, chain sprocket, and motor. Loose, however, and your teeth won’t stay in place and there’s no guarantee you’ll still have full control over the saw.

Finally, turn off and disengage the trigger guard – you don’t want to do that until it’s time to use the saw.

A quick tip: You may need to increase the depth of your cut when cutting thick logs, such as those found in trees or huge hardwoods, because you will lose less material. To move the blade deeper into the wood, try holding the handlebar down with one hand and pulling the bar forward with the other.

FAQ

Q: What is the best gas pole saw?
A: The Maxtra 2-cycle gas pole saw is the best gas pole saw available right now. Its features include a compact and lightweight design, easy start & stop feature, and high torque motor giving it an extremely powerful cutting edge that can cut through thick metal quickly and easily.

Q: What is better, gas or electric pole saw?
A: Gas pole saws are better due to their powerful engine and advanced comfort features. Electric only use battery power which limits its range, cuts faster but is not as reliable as a gas pole saw.

Q: Are battery pole saws any good?
A: Yes, battery pole saws are great! They are portable, lightweight, and appropriate for beginners and professionals. As long as you follow the instructions when using a battery powered pole saw, you will enjoy safe and efficient results every time.

It’s recommended that you do at least one test run before attempting to cut something too large like a tree trunk. Battery powered pole saws are a more economical choice than gas powered pole saws if you’re new to the hobby.

Q: How thick of a branch can a pole saw cut?
A: The maximum branch thickness that a pole saw can cut comfortably is about 8 inches. Any thicker branch or roots require special tools and techniques to safely cut them. With the exception of very thin limbs, most branches must be trimmed down to their centerline so that each end is approximately 1½ inch wide.

Q: How far can a pole saw reach?
A: That will depend on your pole saw. They can reach lengths of anything between 8 and 15 feet. There are many different brands of pole saws available today. It’s a good idea to shop around to find the best price and quality possible.

Also remember to always make sure your safety equipment is in place before cutting a limb or tree. Use the correct chainsaw and practice first to learn how to operate the controls efficiently.
